What's Arlington's housing like?
Middle-aged, mostly. Half the single-family homes were built by 1984, and about two in three before 1990. The oldest are around downtown and in East Arlington. The newest are in Viridian, the master-planned community on the Trinity River in the north, and in parts of south Arlington.
Sheds and gazebos in Arlington
A storage shed over 100 square feet needs a permit, a lower line than the 120 most neighboring cities use. It sits at least 5 feet from the side and rear lines, not in front of the house and not in an easement, and a lot under an acre can have up to three accessory buildings. Up to 200 square feet with walls no taller than 8 feet, any approved material will do. Past that, no metal walls.
Gazebos, patio covers and decks are all permit items in Arlington. Swing sets and playground equipment aren't.
Old Town, Lake Interlochen and the enclaves
Old Town, just north of downtown, is a National Register district of frame houses from about 1903 to 1948, many with a garage apartment at the back and big oaks out front. Lake Interlochen, in the northwest, is an HOA lake neighborhood known for its December lights; in that season the police close most entrances in the evening, so we book those jobs for daytime.
