How old are Carrollton's houses?

Mostly 1970s and '80s. The city grew from about 13,900 people in 1970 to about 82,200 in 1990, and most neighborhoods date from that run. Builder-grade doors that have been swinging for forty-odd years are a standing item: hinges worn, strikes out of line, weatherstripping flat.

The older core is Carrollton Heights, north of Belt Line Road, settled on higher ground after a 1908 flood washed out homes downtown. Its houses run from about 1910 to 1960: Craftsman bungalows, postwar cottages, a few Tudors and early ranches. Out of square is normal there, and we plan for it.

What can go in a Carrollton backyard?

A shed up to 120 square feet needs no permit; bigger than that, it does. Sheds top out at 15 feet tall, and the city's page allows one accessory building per lot besides a detached garage, so if there's already one out back, check before adding another, even a small kit.

Anything spanning more than 24 feet in any direction has to be designed and sealed by a professional engineer. That puts the big pavilion kits in a different category from a garden shed.
